Almost a year ago, we hosted a very special edition of The Writer’s Block at Atlantic Records with both Clean Bandit and Anne-Marie. The two pop heavy hitters came together for a rare performance because at the time they had just released their smash hit “Rockabye,” which they performed along with the most “Shazammed” song ever, “Rather Be.” In between hearing the music, we gave you a little snippet of our interview but today, we’re releasing more of that conversation with Clean Bandit right here.
Of course I had to ask the English electronic brothers, Jack and Luke Patterson (the group also consists of Grace Chatto, who was not on-camera), what their secret is for writing the perfect pop song. It’s all they seem to do – with the two aforementioned songs, plus their latest single “I Miss You” featuring Julia Michaels, they clearly seem to be on a never-ending roll. “Really nice chords… And a kind of universal message,” was their big secret.
We continued to talk about the wild success of “Rather Be” and how singer Jess Glynne got involved. Fun fact: the first take of the song was a much more chilled out, R&B version.
“It was so nice. A lot of the time the way we make music is quite fragmented. We’ll start a song on the road on the lap top and just kind of build it up. Then different people get involved. We hadn’t actually performed the song as a whole with Seal Paul and Anne-Marie until way after we actually finished the music video, so it’s really nice to come full circle and perform it in a relaxed studio enviornment,” the band told shared fondly when I asked them what it was like to perform with Anne-Marie at Atlantic that day.
