John Denver was a genius when it came to composition. He could make simple chord progressions sound lush and complex the way he played them on 12-string. But at the same time–he was a true folk songwriter because even with his seemingly complex melody lines, they were simple enough for the most rudimentary musician to be able to play them.
This song is my favorite, recorded in late 1970 for the album “Poems, Prayers, and Promises,” Denver never released it as a single until late in 1973. It became his first number 1 single.
I don’t think my cover quite does the song justice–but I have fun trying.
