James Brandon Lewis saxophone, Chris Hoffman cello, Max Jaffe drums
James Brandon Lewis is a valuable addition to the impressive list of tenor sax players who have left their mark on jazz history. His powerful, flexible style has been praised by respected predecessors such as Sonny Rollins and J.D. Allen. Like them, Lewis excels in the trio line-up. He can move effortlessly through a variety of styles, from hip-hop and gospel to raw funk jazz in the vein of Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time.
Lewis recorded albums with, among others, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Rudy Royston en Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground). His performance at the NN North Sea Jazz Festival 2016 was regarded as one of the highlights of the festival that year. Now Lewis has a new trio including leaders in their own right cellist Chris Hoffman and drummer Mark Jaffe, with one goal in mind: to chase energy!
