La Maestra : International Competition for Women Conductors - Semi-finals (2/2)– @ARTE Concert

???????? Rehearse and then perform – in just 50 minutes – the accompaniment to a concerto and a scene from an opera: this is the challenge facing the three semi-finalists under the spotlight of La Maestra 2022 tonight. Who will make it through to the final?

La Maestra is a competition for women conductors that has its roots in a depressing statistic: only 4% of conductors engaged to work for French cultural institutions are women. To remedy this situation, in 2020 the @Philharmonie de Paris and the Paris Mozart Orchestra organised the first edition of this international women-only competition.

Fourteen candidates from all over the world are taking part in this new edition of La Maestra. The first two days of the competition are devoted to the playoffs, the third to the semi-final and the fourth to the final, which means that only three of them are now left to compete for the title of laureate. In order to decide which of them goes through, these conductors of a variety of ages must conduct various works, including classics from the repertoire as well as contemporary creations.

Three candidates are taking part in this stage of the semi-final. For the concerto, they were able to choose either Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 7 or Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, while for the opera scene, they were offered an excerpt from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and 3 Lieder by Alma Mahler.

???????? La Maestra est un concours de cheffes d’orchestre né d’un triste constat : 4 % seulement des chefs d’orchestre programmés par des institutions culturelles françaises sont des femmes. Pour y remédier, la Philharmonie de Paris et le Paris Mozart Orchestra ont organisé en 2020 la première édition de cette compétition internationale entièrement dédiée aux femmes.

Quatorze candidates venues du monde entier participent à cette nouvelle édition de La Maestra. Les deux premiers jours de la compétition sont consacrés aux éliminatoires, le troisième à la demi-finale et le quatrième à la finale. Ainsi, elles ne seront plus que trois à pouvoir accéder au titre de lauréate. Pour se départager, ces cheffes de tout âge doivent diriger des œuvres diverses, des classiques du répertoire comme des créations contemporaines.

Trois candidates participent à cette étape des demi-finales. Elles ont pu choisir leur concerto parmi le Concerto pour piano en la mineur op. 7 de Clara Schumann et le Concerto pour piano en sol majeur de Maurice Ravel. En ce qui concerne la scène lyrique, ce sont un extrait du Don Giovanni de Mozart ainsi que 3 Lieder d’Alma Mahler qui leur ont été proposés.
