Epica is a Dutch band from Reuver consisting of Simone Simons (vocals), Mark Jansen (grunt and guitar), Coen Janssen (keyboards), Rob van der Loo (bass guitar), Ariën van Weesenbeek (drums) and Isaac Delahaye (guitar).
The band, which brings a mixture of gothic and symphonic metal, is formed around Mark Jansen, who is also a lyricist and composer. The band's diverse sound comes from different cultures, influenced by film and musical music. It is also an extension of melodic metal, power metal and because of the female vocals it leans towards bands such as Within Temptation, Nightwish, The Gathering and After Forever. Mark's philosophical texts are also characteristic, which cover broad themes and also reflect on current events such as the murder of Pim Fortuyn, and the attacks of September 11, 2001. The band was formed in April 2002 and was completed in October of the same year, after guitarist Mark Jansen left the band After Forever. Mark had initially appointed Helena Iren Michaelsen as the singer, who had already gained fame as the singer of Trail of Tears and now sings in the band Imperia. It didn't click between Helena and the others and that's why the band had to look for a vocalist again. The new singer soon became Simone Simons, a debutante who Mark knew from the After Forever chat site. The band first started under the band name Sahara Dust. Following the album Epica by the group Kamelot the band name was changed to Epica shortly afterwards. Mark describes Epica on the DVD as a place in the universe where answers to life's questions lie. In June 2003 the debut album The Phantom Agony was released, recorded at the Gate Studio in Wolfsburg. In October 2004 the DVD album We Will Take You with Us was released, following the first album. In April 2005 the second album Consign to Oblivion was released, of which Simone also wrote some lyrics. In September 2005 their third album The Score was released. This album contains the film music of the Dutch film Joyride and differs somewhat from what Epica previously brought. This album contains mainly orchestral songs in addition to some arrangements of songs from the album Consign to Oblivion. In May 2006 the photo audiobook The Road to Paradiso was published. It writes about the origin, breakthrough and life "on the road" of Epica. At the end of 2006, Epica started recording their fourth album. They had to hire a drummer for this, since Jeroen Simons had left the band. A (then temporary) replacement drummer was found in Ariën van Weesenbeek of the Dutch death metal band God Dethroned. For the live shows until a permanent drummer is found, Koen Herfst, or Ariën, assisted Epica. In December 2007 Ariën van Weesenbeek became the new drummer of Epica.
