In Hindustani classical music, Raag Dhani is a pentatonic raga (Audav-Audav) derived from Kafi thaat. With the omission of Re and Dha, and the use of Komal Ga and Komal Ni, this raga evokes a mood of tender devotion, romantic yearning, and inner peace.

Traditionally performed in the late morning, Raag Dhani is a favorite among vocalists for its lyrical beauty and emotional depth — often associated with Bhakti rasa and spiritual introspection.

The concert begins with a Nom Tom Alaap, one of the unique alaap techniques under the traditional Agra Gharana, a slow, contemplative vocal improvisation using syllables from the ancient Dhrupad tradition — like “nom”, “tom”, “na”, “re”. This meditative opening introduces the raga in its purest, unhurried form, invoking a spiritual calm.

It then transitions into a Bada Khayal set in Vilambit Ektaal (a 12-beat time cycle), allowing the vocalist to unfold the raga’s depth through graceful, intricate melodic movements.
