Concertmaster: Adam Grüchot
Presenter: Hans-Christian Vadseth

Welcome to our unique 17th of May concert, celebrating Norway's Constitution Day with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. This day, we honor the rich musical heritage of Norway by featuring works from several of our most esteemed composers, amongst them Johan Halvorsen and Edvard Grieg.

Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935) was a prominent figure in Norwegian music, known for his contributions as a composer, conductor, and violinist. Halvorsen's compositions are celebrated for their vibrant orchestration and incorporation of Norwegian folk elements. His works, such as the "Entry March of the Boyars," have become staples in the Norwegian classical repertoire, embodying the spirit and cultural identity of Norway. Halvorsen's dedication to preserving and promoting Norwegian music has left an indelible mark on our national heritage.

Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) is perhaps the most internationally renowned Norwegian composer. His music, deeply rooted in Norwegian folk traditions, has played a crucial role in shaping Norway's national identity. Grieg's compositions, including the famous "Peer Gynt Suite" and "Piano Concerto in A minor," are celebrated for their lyrical beauty and evocative use of folk melodies. Grieg's ability to capture the essence of Norwegian landscapes and folklore in his music has made him a symbol of Norwegian cultural pride.

We are also honored to feature the renowned harmonica virtuoso, Sigmund Groven. Born in Heddal, Telemark, Groven is considered one of the world's leading classical harmonica players. With a career spanning six decades, he has performed with major orchestras and musicians globally, and his repertoire ranges from classical and traditional folk music to his own compositions. Groven's contributions to music include over 350 original compositions and 23 albums. His ability to blend the harmonica's unique sound with orchestral music adds a distinctive and captivating element to our concert.

Tonight's program features a selection of works that showcase the brilliance of Halvorsen and Grieg, offering a musical journey through Norway's rich cultural tapestry. As we celebrate our national day, let us reflect on the enduring legacy of these composers and their contributions to our national identity.

Thank you for joining us in this celebration of Norwegian music and heritage. We hope you enjoy the concert and feel a sense of pride in our shared cultural legacy.
