The Arctic Monkeys are a British indie rock band from Sheffield, England. The band, which was founded in 2002, consists of singer-guitarist Alex Turner, guitarist Jamie Cook, bassist Nick O'Malley and drummer Matthew Helders. Until 2006, Andy Nicholson was the band's bass player. In 2004 and 2005 the band became known for distributing their demos via the internet. This created a media hype around Arctic Monkeys and made their debut album Whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not the best-selling debut ever in the United Kingdom in 2006. Like the album, the singles "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and "When the Sun Goes Down" reached the No. 1 position in the country. A year later the second album Favourite Worst Nightmare followed, with lead single "Brianstorm". In 2009 the third album Humbug was released, produced by Josh Homme and James Ford. Since 2012, the band members have been living in Los Angeles. The band was characterized on their debut album by their fast, aggressive post-punk and Turner's lyrics that were based on their own observations and experiences in Sheffield. With the arrival of their later albums, the sound evolved more towards psychedelic and alternative rock.
