In tonight’s concert, we’ll see that tradition is a living thing, kept alive by those who live it. Winnipeg singer and songwriter William Prince comes from a long line of preachers in the community of Peguis First Nation. Influenced by the generations that came before him—from the gospel of his childhood to classic outlaw country singers, baseball, and the great beyond—William’s songwriting connects the past to the present. With striking vocal harmonies, staggering musicianship, and captivating storytelling, Newfoundland’s Rum Ragged take a bold approach to the distinct folk music of their home. A reverence for their roots and a creative, contemporary edge, has earned this award-winning young band a reputation as the finest performers of their great, living, musical tradition. Kalolin Johnson is a singer and musician from Eskasoni First Nation who has been singing in both Mi’kmaq and English since she was young. From traditional songs to new compositions, Kalolin’s music looks to the future even as she honours the past. And the traditions live on.
