he Smashing Pumpkins is an American alternative rock group that released its first single in 1990. With influential albums such as Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, the group was one of the most famous rock bands of the nineties and later. Corgan is often seen as the musical genius behind the group. After the breakup of the band in 2000, he quickly formed a new band (Zwan), and then started a solo career. In June 2005 his first CD was released, entitled 'TheFutureEmbrace'. Iha also made a solo CD, called 'Let It Come Down', and later became the guitarist of the group A Perfect Circle. Chamberlin released his first CD with his own group Jimmy Chamberlin Complex in 2005. Wretzky, on the other hand, opted for a life outside of publicity. In 2018, both Iha and Chamberlin are official band members again. In June 2005, frontman Billy Corgan announced through a full-page advertisement in an American newspaper that he wanted to revive Smashing Pumpkins. On April 20, 2006, it was announced via the band's website that the group was working on new songs. These were taken during the rest of the year. Eventually, the band announced that the sixth studio album, called 'Zeitgeist', would be released on July 10, 2007. This album contains 12 songs. They did their first performance in seven years at le Grand Rex in Paris. At the end of May 2007 the band was present at Pinkpop in the Netherlands and a week later at Rock am Ring in Germany. In April 2007, it was announced that guitarist James Iha and bassist Melissa Auf der Maur would no longer be part of Smashing Pumpkins. Iha preferred to record his second solo album. During the last (...) only Corgan and Chamberlin still played. Jeff Schroeder played guitar at the time and Ginger Reyes was the new bass player. However, it was not immediately clear whether they would become a permanent part of the group. On March 20, 2009, Corgan announced via the Pumpkins' website that Chamberlin had left the band, leaving the former as the only one left of the original line-up. In 2016, former guitarist James Iha performed a few times as a guest musician, in 2018 both Jimmy Chamberlin and James Iha both officially rejoined. A new drummer has been found, through open auditions, in the person of the then 19-year-old Mike Byrne, who soon went on tour with Corgan's tribute band 'Spirits In The Sky', which mainly played work by the musician Sky Saxon (The Seeds), who died in 2009. Corgan also announced in 2009 that he was working on a new Smashing Pumpkins album that will be titled 'Teargarden By Kaleidyscope' and will contain 44 songs. Remarkably, all these 44 songs are offered as a download completely free of charge via the band's official website.
