Junkie XL is the stage name of Antonius (Tom) Holkenborg (born December 8, 1967 in Lichtenvoorde, Netherlands), a Dutch DJ, composer and producer. Holkenborg was a member of Weekend at Waikiki and the metal band Nerve. With Rudeboy, who comes from the Urban Dance Squad, he made 2 albums. Until 2000 Junkie XL was a live band, with René van der Zee on guitar, DJ Frankie D on the turntables and Baz Mattie on drums at the live performances. In 1998, Holkenborg kicked Frankie D out of the band after a quarrel. At the end of 1999 Van der Zee stopped as a guitarist and Holkenborg replaced him with Henk Gubbels (Weekend at Waikiki). Mattie also stated that she wanted to stop. Holkenborg had already given a few performances as a DJ and at the end of 1999/beginning of 2000 he and rapper Rudeboy decided to continue together. At the end of 2000, rapper Rudeboy left the project, because he thought the emphasis was too much on dance music. In 2002, Junkie XL broke through worldwide with his remix of Elvis Presley's A Little Less Conversation, but under the name JXL. The family of the deceased singer did not want a connection between drug use (Junkie) and overweight (XL) on the one hand and Presley on the other. The song was in first place of the Mega Top 100 for five weeks. Following the worldwide success, Holkenborg received many requests to remix the Beatles song Strawberry Fields Forever and to make an entire CD with Presley remixes. He rejected these requests, because only the making of money would be central and not the music. In the same period, Holkenborg was also employed by the British DJ Sasha. Together with Charlie May (Spooky), they helped Sasha finish the album Airdrawndagger (2002). Sasha and Tom also worked together later in 2002 on the track Breezer, which is on the B-side of the single Beauty that never fades. In 2003, Holkenborg left for the United States to work on soundtracks for films and computer games, including The Matrix Reloaded, Catwoman and Need for Speed: Pro Street. He also did remixes for Britney Spears, among others. In 2006, Holkenborg and Doe Maar singer/bassist Henny Vrienten made the campaign song of the PvdA for the parliamentary elections, Take my hand. The latest remix by Holkenborg is an adaptation of the single 4 Minutes by Madonna. In the television program De Wereld Draait Door of March 21, 2008, Holkenborg announced this news to the world. He also gave an impression of how he had come to this adaptation in the live show. At that time, Holkenborg had not yet met her, but Madonna had already let him know that she thought the mix was 'fantastic'. Holkenborg's remix was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2011 he made the music for the theater performance De Russen! Ivanov meets Platonov by Toneelgroep Amsterdam, in 2012 for the Dutch drama series Lijn 32 by the KRO and NCRV.
