Keane is an English band consisting of Tom Chaplin (lead vocals, keyboards, guitar), Tim Rice-Oxley (piano, keyboards, bass, vocals), Richard Hughes (drums, vocals) and Jesse Quin (bass, keyboards, percussion, vocals). Tom Chaplin, Tim Rice-Oxley and Richard Hughes all grew up in Battle, in East Sussex, and went to the same school. Rice-Oxley founded the band The Lotus Eaters in 1995 with Dominic Scott, and asked Hughes to be the drummer. In 1997, Tom Chaplin joined the band, as lead singer and acoustic guitarist. With Chaplin's arrival, the name was immediately changed to Cherry Keane. Cherry Keane was a close friend of Chaplin's mother at the time when the band members were young. The name is therefore a reference to the fact that the men have known each other for so long and share memories together. Later the name was shortened to Keane. That same year, Chaplin took a rest year. Shortly after his return, the band gave its first live performance on July 13, 1998, in a London pub. In July 2001, lead guitarist Scott left the band to finish his studies at the London School of Economics. The remaining band members decided, after a lesser year, to perform again in December 2002. During one of those performances, they were noticed by Simon Williams of the Fierce Panda label, who asked them to release a single. They chose Everybody's Changing, a compelling song. In their home base, the United Kingdom, the band had already released a few singles, but without success. Everybody's Changing, on the other hand, became a great success and reached number three in the English charts. After this, the band received offers from various record companies. In the summer of 2003, the band decided to sign with Island Records. In October 2003, the band released This Is The Last Time, their last single on the Fierce Panda label. In the rest of Europe, however, Somewhere Only We Know was the first single released. Later, Everybody's Changing was also released outside the United Kingdom and became a top 10 hit in several countries. In 2004 their debut album Hopes and Fears was released. In the United Kingdom, a real hype arose around the "rock group without guitars". In 2005 the band won two Brit Awards: for Best British Newcomer and Best British Album.. On June 9, 2006, Keane released their second album, entitled Under the Iron Sea. It was preceded by the singles Is It Any Wonder? and Atlantic as download-only. A few days earlier, the band played at Pinkpop. The album entered the Album Top 100 in its first week (week 24). On August 21, the single Crystal Ball followed and on October 30, the third physical single, Nothing In My Way, was released.
