Pennywise live at Pinkpop, Sunday May 26, 1996.
Pennywise is a punk band from Hermosa Beach, California, United States. The band was founded in 1988 by guitarist Fletcher Dragge, bassist Jason Thirsk, singer Jim Lindberg and drummer Byron McMackin and takes its name from a character in the book It by horror writer Stephen King. The first album, Word From The Wise/Wildcard, was released in 1989 and contained eight songs, including a cover of Stand By Me. The album was released on Theologian Records. The second album, Pennywise, is released in 1991, an album with fourteen songs. This and the rest of the albums will be released by Epitaph Records. The third and fourth albums follow in 1993 (Unknown Road) and 1995 (About Time). In 1996, bassist Jason Thirsk commits suicide. Initially, the remaining band members didn't want to continue playing, but later they pick up where they left off with a new bass player, Randy Bradbury. Jim Lindberg, singer of the band, writes the lyrics himself. Some songs written by Jason Thirsk are still played during performances, in memory of the deceased band member. An example of this is the most famous song Bro Hymn. This song is played in the GelreDome when Vitesse has scored a goal, there is a gabber cover and even a Dutch Skihut cover. In August 2009, singer Lindberg announced that he was leaving the group. He was succeeded later that year by Zoli Teglas, singer of the Orange County hardcore band Ignite. In 2010 the album All or Nothing was recorded with Teglas as singer; The album was only released in 2012. In the same year, Lindberg returned as the group's vocalist.
