Rancid is an American punk band with influences from ska. The Californian band was formed in Berkeley in 1991 by Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman. Both artists have been playing in punk bands since the 80s, including Operation Ivy. Over a career spanning nearly three decades, the band has had albums released by independent record labels only. To date, the band has released nine studio albums, a split album, two EPs, and a compilation album. The most recent studio album, Trouble Maker, was released on June 9, 2017 through Epitaph Records. Armstrong and Freeman have been friends since they were five years old and had previously played in several bands together, including the punk band Operation Ivy. Armstrong had had an alcohol and drug problem for several years, which worsened after Operation Ivy broke up. When Freeman wanted to break off contact with Armstrong after a few years because of his addictions, Armstrong decided to kick the habit. After Armstrong had kicked the habit, they formed the band Rancid. Armstong's roommate Brett Reed was asked to play the drums. If it had been up to Freeman, it would have stayed with this formation, because he only wanted to play in the band with friends of his. After the release of the debut album Rancid, on which Billie Joe Armstrong (of the pop-punk band Green Day) collaborated, Tim Armstrong saw a performance by Lars Frederiksen with his band. After the performance, Armstrong asked Frederiksen to come and play with Rancid in case his band broke up. The band did indeed break up and Lars Frederiksen joined Rancid as second guitarist/singer. However, this did not go without a struggle, because Freeman initially wanted to keep the formation at three members. After the release of the second studio album Let's Go, Rancid gained more fame in the punk scene itself. After the release of the third studio album ... And Out Come the Wolves also gained more recognition outside the punk scene, especially through the songs "Ruby Soho" and "Time Bomb". On November 3, 2006, the band announced that drummer Brett Reed had left the band. His replacement was Branden Steineckert, who came from the alternative rock band The Used.
