Audioslave was an American hard rock supergroup formed in Los Angeles in 2001. The band consisted of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell and the instrumentalists of Rage Against the Machine: guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk. Critics initially saw the band as an amalgamation of Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden, but with their second album Out of Exile, the band established its own identity. The band's sound was typified by a mixture of seventies hard rock and alternative rock from the nineties. Tom Morello supplemented this mix with his well-known, unorthodox guitar solos. As with Rage Against the Machine, the band members boasted that all sounds on their albums were only produced by guitar, drums, bass or vocals. After Audioslave released three albums, received three Grammy nominations, and became the first American rock band to perform in Cuba, the band came to an end in February 2007 when Chris Cornell decided to leave the band.
