The Notwist is a German indie rock band formed in 1989, known for evolving through various musical styles, from heavy metal and dark indie rock to electronica. Initially founded by the Acher brothers and Messerschmid in Weilheim in Oberbayern, the band recorded their debut album in 1990, characterized by a grunge-metal sound. By 1992, they shifted towards indie rock with the release of "Nook," and by 1995, they dabbled in electronics with "12." The addition of Martin Gretschmann in 1997 marked a significant turn towards a jazz-electro-rock fusion, culminating in the critically acclaimed album "Neon Golden" in 2002, which appealed to American audiences with its pop-oriented sound.
Following Messerschmid's departure in 2007, Andi Haberl joined the band. Their sixth album, "The Devil, You + Me," was released in Europe in May 2008 and in North America in June 2008. In 2009, they ventured into film soundtracks with "Storm," directed by Hans-Christian Schmid. The band continued to tour and tease new music, leading to the release of "Close to the Glass" in February 2014 on Sub Pop Records, which was later nominated for IMPALA's European Independent Album of the Year Award in 2015. Martin Gretschmann left the group in 2014, marking another change in the band's long and diverse career.
