Placebo is an alternative rock band from the United Kingdom, consisting of American-Scottish singer/guitarist Brian Molko, Swedish bassist Stefan Olsdal and drummer Matt Lunn. Placebo was formed in 1994 in London, but has its roots in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, where singer/guitarist Brian Molko and guitarist/bassist Stefan Olsdal attended an international boarding school. The two didn't have much in common at that time. At the age of 17, Molko left for London to study drama at Goldsmiths Academy. During that same period, he met Olsdal again at South Kensington tube station. They decided to start a band together under the name 'Ashtray Heart'. They played with drummer Steve Hewitt for a while, but he already had commitments to a local band, Breed. At the end of 1994, Robert Schulzberg finally took over the drum position, and the band was renamed Placebo, after the Latin meaning 'I will please'. In 1995, the band released their first single, "Bruise Pristine", on the independent label Fierce Panda Records. As a result, the band received many offers from other labels, and in February 1996, "Come Home" was released on the Deceptive Records label. On 17 July 1996, during the height of Britpop, Placebo's self-titled debut album, Placebo, reached number five in the UK album charts. After numerous disagreements between Schulzberg and the other two members, it was decided that it would be best for the band if Schulzberg left. He was replaced by Steve Hewitt in September 1996. In 1997, the band achieved their first major success with the single "Nancy Boy", which reached number four in the UK charts and became a hit in the alternative music scene in continental Europe. The single also caught the attention of David Bowie, who invited them to open for him on his tours.
The second album, Without You I'm Nothing, was released in 1998, and was preceded by the singles "Pure Morning" (at number 4 in England) and "You Don’t Care About Us" (at number 5 in England). The album received good reviews, mainly because of Brian's personal, cynical lyrics. Despite the great success of "Pure Morning", frontman Molko himself considered the lyrics of the song unsatisfactory and refused to play the song live for nine years. The band also played a modest role in the glam rock film Velvet Goldmine that year. In 2000, Placebo's third album, Black Market Music, was released, which was also well received and the singles "Special K", "Black-Eyed" and "Slave to the Wage" became minor hits. In 2003, Sleeping With Ghosts was released.
Their fifth album Meds was released in March 2006 and was generally well received. The band themselves considered this album to be their best at the time and also claimed that they were returning to their roots with this album, namely heavy rock, like their first two albums, although there are also some quiet songs on it such as "Pierrot the Clown" and "Follow the Cops Back Home". This album caused some commotion among fans, because the motto of the album was 'The Death of Nancy Boy', which means that Placebo tried to shake off their loose, androgynous image with this album, while Placebo was actually mainly known for that. It also partly contributed to their growing popularity in the 90s. Four singles were released from the album. "Because I Want You" was released simultaneously with "Song to Say Goodbye", respectively in Great Britain and the rest of the world. The third single was "Infra-Red". "Meds" was the last single, a song in collaboration with Alison Mosshart of The Kills, also a good friend of Brian Molko. On June 3, 2006 Placebo performed at Pinkpop 2006.
