Thirty Seconds to Mars (also known as 30 Seconds to Mars or 30STM) is an American rock band, fronted by actor Jared Leto. Thirty Seconds to Mars was founded in 1998 by Jared Leto and his brother Shannon Leto. Over the years, the line-up of the band changed several times. Besides the Leto brothers, the only permanent band member is currently Tomo Milicevic. Since the departure of bassist Matt Wachter, who left the band for personal reasons, the band is supplemented by bassist Tim Kelleher at live concerts. Although Leto is a well-known Hollywood actor, he does not want to use this fame to promote his band. For example, the band even refuses to play in places that use Leto's fame to promote the show. The first album, 30 Seconds to Mars, produced by Bob Ezrin, was released in 2002. The second album, A Beautiful Lie, was released in 2005 and was more successful than the first album and marked the band's international breakthrough. The album was produced by Josh Abraham, who has also worked with Linkin Park, Orgy and Velvet Revolver. Because A Beautiful Lie was leaked five months before the release date, the band decided to add two bonus tracks: Battle of One and Hunter (a cover of Björk). To promote the album even further, the band did 'golden passes' in a few albums, which give the owner of the CD access to concerts of 30 Seconds to Mars, where they are also allowed to go backstage. The album was certified platinum in the United States in December 2006. On August 31, 2006, the band won an MTV2 Award for The Kill at the MTV Video Music Awards in the United States, one of two nominations. At the MTV Europe Music Awards in November 2007, the band won the award for best rock band. The band also caused a stir by being the first American band ever to record a clip in China for the single From Yesterday. For a while, the clip was wrongly known as the most expensive music video ever ($13,000,000). In an interview with TMF VJ Saar Koningsberger, Leto denied this. For the last single from the album, title track A Beautiful Lie, the band traveled to Greenland to record the accompanying video. The clip is a mini-film in which attention is paid to combating the enhanced greenhouse effect. On December 4, 2009, the band released their third studio album, This Is War. The album was released later than planned due to contractual conflicts with label EMI. In October, the first single Kings and Queens was released, with the American radio premiere on October 6 and the digital release on October 13, 2009. The accompanying video clip is a mini-film directed by Leto in which a large group of people cycle through the streets of Los Angeles at night. On September 20, 2010, the band won a VMA for the video Kings and Queens. On Monday, May 9, 2011, Leto announced that he would stop 30 Seconds to Mars for a while.
