Snow Patrol is a Northern Irish/Scottish alternative rock band, consisting of frontman Gary Lightbody (vocals, songwriter and guitarist), Johnny McDaid (bassist and backing vocals, guitarist, keyboardist) and Nathan Connolly (guitar and backing vocals). From September 2023, the band will continue as a trio without Quinn and Wilson. Originally set up in Dundee, the band now operates out of Glasgow. The first three albums, the EP Starfighter Pilot and the studio albums Songs for Polarbears and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up were not commercially successful and were released by the independent record labels Electric Honey and Jeepster. The albums could be placed in the indie genre. When the band moved to the major label Fiction under Interscope, they released the album Final Straw in 2003, which was awarded quadruple platinum status, supported by the single Run which reached the fifth position in the UK Singles Chart. With the release of Eyes Open in 2006, on which the band went more towards alternative and power pop, the band broke through definitively. Singles like Chasing Cars and Shut Your Eyes reached high positions and stayed in the charts for a long time, just like the album. After years of touring, the band decided to take a break, but in the fall of 2008 they released their fifth album A Hundred Million Suns with Take Back the City as the lead single. The second single Crack the Shutters became a hit in the Dutch Top 40. In November 2009 the compilation album Up to Now was released, with the techno-influenced Just Say Yes, with which the band reached its peak in the Netherlands with the first position. In November 2011 the sixth album Fallen Empires was released. After a 7-year silence, during which frontman Gary Lightbody was depressed and addicted to alcohol, released the album Wildness in May 2018. Worldwide, the band has sold more than eleven million albums, of which Eyes Open is the most successful.
