The Tragically Hip was a Canadian rock band from Kingston, Ontario. The band consisted of Gordon Downie (lead vocalist and guitar), Paul Langlois (guitar), Rob Baker (guitar), Gord Sinclair (bass) and Johnny Fay (drums). The band is often referred to simply as The Hip. The name comes from a film (Elephant Parts) by Michael Nesmith of The Monkees. The band was founded in 1983 and started as a cover band. They mainly covered songs by the Golden Earring and The Rolling Stones. The band originally had a saxophonist in its ranks. The band was especially popular and influential in their home country of Canada. Singer Gordon Downie also has a number of solo albums to his name. In May 2016, it was announced that Downie was terminally ill. He suffered from glioblastoma, one of the worst forms of brain cancer, and finally passed away on October 17, 2017. On Saturday, August 20, 2016, The Tragically Hip gave their last gig at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ontario, the venue where the band played its first shows in the 80s. This last gig was also broadcast live on Canadian TV. In 2005, The Tragically Hip was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. There is also a street named after the band: The Tragically Hip Way in Kingston.
