Irakere (Yoruba for "vegetation") is a Cuban band formed in 1973 by Armando de Sequeira Romeu (music director and composer) and pianist Chucho Valdés. They won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording in 1979 with their album Irakere. Irakere uses many different percussion instruments such as the batá, abacuá and arará drums and the chequerés, erikundis, maracas, claves, cencerros, bongo, congas and güiro.
